The Ryobi-compatible models take ONE+ 18V packs directly: slide the pack onto the dock, pull the trigger or hit the wireless remote, and you get up to 150+ dB depending on the tier. Ryobi's 40V lawn packs are a different animal — a different physical mount, a different contact layout, and roughly double the voltage. Two Ryobi platforms, two different jobs
Ryobi runs two big battery ecosystems side by side, and they don't cross over. The ONE+ 18V platform launched back in 1996 and now covers roughly 300 tools and products — drills, saws, fans, inflators, lights — all sharing one slide-on battery design that has stayed physically unchanged from the beginning. Any ONE+ pack ever made fits any ONE+ tool ever made. That's the platform our Ryobi-battery horns are built around.
The 40V platform is Ryobi's outdoor power equipment line: mowers, string trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, snow blowers — more than 85 tools in the system. Those motors need far more wattage than a drill, so the packs are built bigger: ten lithium-ion cells in series instead of five, in a larger housing with its own mount and contact geometry. The two platforms were never designed to interchange — a 40V pack physically cannot seat on an 18V tool port, and vice versa.

Why 40V would cook the horn even if the mount matched
The "40V" on the label is the peak voltage of a freshly charged pack. Inside are ten lithium-ion cells in series: 3.6V nominal each for 36V nominal, and about 4.1–4.2V per cell hot off the charger — roughly 41–42V at the terminals. Compare that to a ONE+ pack: five cells in series, 18V nominal, about 20V fully charged.
The horn's three electrical systems — compressor motor, solenoid valve, and wireless remote receiver — are all designed around that 18V–24V window. Feed them 36–42V and you don't get a louder horn; you get an overdriven motor and fried receiver electronics. Loudness comes from the compressor's airflow and the trumpet design, not from pushing more volts into the circuit. A 130 dB dual-trumpet setup at 18V stays a 130 dB setup at any voltage — right up until the extra voltage kills it.
"Can't I just use an adapter?"

Stepping 40V down to 18V is a different problem entirely. The commercial step-down units built for Ryobi 40V packs are aimed at 12V DIY projects — RC cars, kids' ride-on toys — in the 15A/180W class. The DIY 40V-to-18V converter builds you'll find on hobby forums are capped around 10A of continuous draw, and their builders warn against using them on high-draw motor tools. A horn compressor is exactly that kind of motor load. Add the practical side — you'd be hanging a mower-size pack plus a converter box off a horn balanced around a compact 18V battery — and the honest math is simple: one used ONE+ pack costs less than a converter stack that might still smoke your receiver.
The right setup for a 40V household
If your Ryobi gear is all 40V lawn equipment, the entry ticket to the horn is one ONE+ 18V pack — any capacity, any year. Because the ONE+ mount hasn't changed since 1996, a basic 2Ah pack, a decade-old lithium pack from a garage-sale drill kit, or a current high-capacity pack all seat on the horn identically. If you don't own one, you can add an 18V ONE+-compatible 6Ah battery and charger at checkout and be done with it. FAQ
Will a Ryobi® 40V battery physically click onto a battery train horn?
No. The 40V pack uses a different housing, mount, and contact layout than the ONE+ 18V slide pack, and Ryobi's two platforms are not cross-compatible in either direction. It won't seat on the horn's dock at all.
Are 40V HP packs any different for this?
No. Standard 40V and 40V HP batteries are interchangeable with each other across 40V tools, but they're the same 36V-nominal, ten-cell architecture. HP changes the output electronics and cell quality, not the voltage class — both stay on the lawn equipment.
What's the cheapest way in if I only own 40V packs?
A single ONE+ 18V battery. Any capacity works — a small 2Ah pack runs the horn fine for occasional use, and higher-capacity packs just mean more blasts between charges. You don't need to buy into a whole new tool lineup; one pack and a charger is the complete entry cost.
Would a higher-voltage battery at least make the horn louder?
