Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about BossHorn portable train horns — power, compatibility, safety, shipping, and returns. Search below or pick a topic on the left.
·Product Basics
01 What is a BossHorn portable train horn?
A BossHorn is a battery-powered air horn that produces a real train-style blast — up to 150 dB, depending on the model. Each unit pairs an industrial-grade air compressor with metal trumpets and runs off the same 18V or 20V cordless-tool battery you already own (Milwaukee M18, DeWalt 20V, Ryobi ONE+, Makita LXT, and 12 other brands). No installation, no drilling — snap in your battery and press the wireless remote.
02 How loud are BossHorns, really?
Three tiers cover the full loudness range:
- Dual (130 dB) — heard up to ~½ mile. Backyard, off-road, casual use.
- Quad (140 dB) — heard up to 1 mile. Tailgates, marine, RV, highway.
- Extreme / Boss Series (150 dB) — heard up to 1.5 miles. Stadium, construction, signal use.
For reference: a jet engine at takeoff is ~140 dB, the threshold of pain begins around 130 dB. Hearing protection (NRR 30+) is mandatory.
03 What's the difference between Dual, Quad, Extreme and Boss Series?
Dual: 2 trumpets, high pitch, 130 dB — entry-level, lightest, lowest price.
Quad: 4 trumpets, medium pitch, 140 dB — most popular, signature train-horn tone.
Extreme Series: 4 oversized trumpets, deep low pitch, 150 dB — flagship loudness, includes the long-range remote (2,000 ft).
Boss Series (2026): same 150 dB output as Extreme but in our redesigned 2026 housing — the latest BossHorn flagship.
04 Is it a real air horn or a loud speaker?
Real air horn. There's no speaker, no recording — sound is produced by air pushed through metal trumpets, exactly like locomotive and marine horns. That's why no Bluetooth speaker, smartphone, or YouTube clip can faithfully reproduce the volume.
05 Where are BossHorns made?
Hand-assembled in Santa Clarita, California using a mix of domestic and imported components — precision-machined trumpet arrays, US-sourced industrial compressors, and ergonomic power-tool-style housings. Every unit is bench-tested before it ships.
·Compatibility & Setup
06 Which battery brands work with BossHorn?
Drop-in compatibility with 16 cordless-tool platforms: Milwaukee M18, DeWalt 20V MAX, Ryobi ONE+ 18V, Makita LXT 18V, Hart 20V, Bauer 20V, Craftsman V20, Ridgid 18V, Bosch 18V, Hercules 20V, Kobalt 24V, Flex 24V, Worx 20V, Porter-Cable 20V, Skil 20V, BLACK+DECKER 20V. Pick the model that matches the brand of batteries you already own — no adapters, no rewiring.
07 Is the battery included?
By default, no — most customers already own batteries from their cordless tools. If you don't, we offer a battery + charger bundle on the product page (variant selector). Match the brand to your existing tools and you'll have charged spares everywhere.
08 How long does a battery last on one charge?
A 5 Ah battery delivers roughly 500 short blasts — enough for a full day of intermittent signal use at events, tailgates, or off-road trips. Smaller 2–3 Ah batteries deliver proportionally fewer; larger 6+ Ah packs go further. Continuous compressor run isn't realistic on any portable horn (overheating + rapid drain), but for typical use you won't run out mid-event.
09 Do I need to install or wire anything?
No. Out of the box: snap battery in, point trumpets away from people, press the wireless remote. The compressor and trumpets are factory-aligned and pre-tested. Average setup time is under 60 seconds.
10 How far does the wireless remote work?
Depends on the model:
- 2026 models ship with our upgraded wireless remote — works up to 300 ft line-of-sight.
- All other models (previous generations and current non-2026 lineup) ship with the standard remote — works up to 160 ft line-of-sight.
For any horn you can add the optional long-range remote (up to 2,000 ft) — perfect for stadium, off-road, or marine use. Range on any remote degrades through walls and metal — mount the horn high and keep line-of-sight clear.
11 Can I change the trumpet color or finish?
Yes. Every model is available in Matte Black, Chrome, and Red — pick your color in the variant selector on each product page. Trumpets are powder-coated aluminum alloy.
·Use & Safety
12 Are train horns legal?
Owning a portable air horn is legal in all 50 US states. Using one is governed by local noise ordinances. Most jurisdictions prohibit honking in residential areas, near schools/hospitals, or after quiet hours. On vehicles, some states require an OEM-style horn audible at 200 ft and may prohibit auxiliary horns.
Always check your local laws — state, county, and municipal noise ordinances and vehicle codes can all apply, and they vary widely by location. The buyer is solely responsible for compliance with all applicable regulations.
13 Can a BossHorn damage my hearing?
Yes — at 140 dB and above, even a fraction of a second can cause permanent hearing loss or tinnitus per OSHA / NIOSH guidelines. Always wear ANSI S3.19 or S12.6 hearing protection (NRR 30+) when operating. Bystanders within 100 ft must also wear protection. Never aim the horn at people, animals, or your own ears.
14 Is it weatherproof?
The trumpet array and housing are corrosion-resistant and tolerate light rain, snow, and humidity. Submersion or pressure-washing voids the warranty. Wipe down after use, store indoors when not in use, and remove the battery if storing for more than a month.
15 Can I mount it on my truck or boat?
Mechanically, yes — many customers do. Legally, it depends on your state and use case. For boats, the USCG recommends a horn audible at ½ nautical mile (BossHorn easily exceeds that). For street vehicles, follow your state vehicle code and avoid using it as a primary horn. We do not recommend permanent vehicle installation without consulting local law first.
Never mount a BossHorn under the hood of a vehicle. Engine-bay temperatures can exceed safe operating limits for the plastic housing, electronics, and battery — the unit can melt or even catch fire from prolonged heat exposure. Mount it externally (truck bed, roll bar, marine deck, exterior bracket) where it gets airflow and stays away from the engine.
16 Is it safe to use around pets and children?
No. The volume can frighten or injure animals at close range and can cause hearing damage to children. Keep pets and minors at least 100 ft away when operating, and never use the horn as a prank or in confined spaces.

20 Is there a warranty?
