If your shop has moved to Makita® 40V max XGT® gear — a rotary hammer, a chainsaw, a mower — and you're eyeing a battery train horn, the question is fair: can the XGT pack run it? No. The horn runs on the 18V LXT® platform, and the XGT pack stays on the big tools. Here's why, with the real numbers.

The short answer: XGT doesn't fit, and it shouldn't

Every battery train horn we build runs on cordless tool batteries in the 18V–24V class. The Makita-compatible models take 18V LXT slide packs directly: seat the pack, squeeze the trigger or hit the wireless remote, and you get 130 dB from the dual-trumpet setup, 140 dB from the quad, and 150 dB from the Extreme Series. A 40V max XGT pack is a different animal. It rides a wider rail with extra communication pins, and it delivers double the voltage of an LXT pack. It will not seat on the horn's battery dock, and even if it could, the horn's compressor and remote receiver aren't built for 36–40 volts. Two Makita platforms that were never meant to cross

Makita runs two separate cordless systems side by side. The 18V LXT platform started in 2005, when Makita created the 18V lithium-ion cordless tool category, and it has grown into what Makita calls the world's largest compatible 18V slide-style battery system — over 350 products as of 2026. Every 18V LXT pack made since then uses the same slide rail, which is why any LXT battery from any year fits our Makita-battery horns. The 36V "X2" tools on that platform simply take two 18V packs at once; they're still LXT.

The 40V max XGT platform is newer and completely separate. Makita announced it in October 2019, and the first wave of tools reached the US in April 2021. It launched with a 2.5Ah and a 4.0Ah battery, and Makita now lists 170+ XGT products, up to 80V max "X2" equipment that runs two XGT packs. When ToolGuyd asked Makita why the two platforms don't cross over, Makita declined to comment. And the physical answer is on the pack itself: the XGT rail is wider than the LXT rail, and it carries additional pins for the digital communication that XGT tools, batteries, and chargers use to monitor overload, over-discharge, and overheating. An XGT pack physically cannot seat on an LXT tool port, and an LXT pack cannot seat on an XGT tool.

Same ten cells, wired differently: why XGT gives you zero extra runtime

A 40V max XGT pack and an 18V LXT pack of the same generation both contain ten 18650-size lithium-ion cells. The difference is wiring. The XGT pack runs all ten cells in series: ten times 3.6V nominal is 36V nominal, and a fresh charge pushes it to roughly 40V at the terminals, which is where the "40V max" label comes from. The LXT pack runs two parallel strings of five cells: five times 3.6V is 18V nominal, about 20V hot off the charger, with the parallel string doubling the amp-hours instead of the voltage.

Multiply it out and the energy stored is identical. A 2.5Ah XGT pack holds 36V × 2.5Ah = 90 watt-hours. A 5.0Ah LXT pack holds 18V × 5.0Ah = 90 watt-hours. Same cells, same energy, different voltage. A horn compressor draws a fixed amount of work per blast, so the number of blasts you get per charge is set by watt-hours, not volts. Bolting a 40V pack onto a horn would not buy you a single extra blast over the equivalent LXT pack — it would just feed the motor and receiver twice the voltage they were designed for.

What about weight? The BL4040 4.0Ah XGT battery is listed at 2.25 lbs, while the BL1850B 5.0Ah LXT battery weighs 1.4 lbs. On a handheld horn, the lighter pack with the same energy is the one you want on the dock.

Why 40V would cook the horn even if it clicked on

The horn's three electrical systems — compressor motor, solenoid valve, and wireless remote receiver — are all designed around the 18V–24V window that every major tool-battery platform sits in. Feed them 36–40V and you don't get a louder horn. You get an overdriven motor and fried receiver electronics. Loudness comes from the compressor's airflow and the trumpet count and length, which is exactly why our tiers run 130 dB (dual), 140 dB (quad), and 150 dB (Extreme) on the same 18V packs. The voltage doesn't set the decibels; it sets whether the circuit survives.

That's the same reason we tell Ryobi® owners to leave the 40V lawn pack on the mower. "Can't I just use an adapter?"

Two kinds of adapters come up in this conversation, and only one of them is from Makita.

The official one is the ADP10, and it's easy to misread. The ADP10 is a charger adapter: it lets a 40V max XGT rapid charger charge 18V LXT batteries, and Makita rates it at 40 minutes for a 5.0Ah LXT pack. It does not let an XGT battery power an LXT tool, and it does not let an LXT battery power an XGT tool. ToolGuyd's summary of Makita's cross-platform support is blunt: there's an XGT-charger-to-18V-battery adapter, and that's it. For a horn owner it's still handy: if you already own an XGT charger and buy one LXT pack for the horn, you don't need a second charger.

The other kind is aftermarket. Third-party step-down adapters exist that accept a 36V/40V XGT pack and use a DC-DC converter to output roughly what a fully charged 18V pack reads, rated around 60A continuous. They cost in the neighborhood of a small LXT battery, they're one-direction only, and you can't charge through them. Our position hasn't changed from the cross-brand adapter guide: adapters between same-voltage platforms are a reasonable shortcut, but stacking a step-down converter between a heavy XGT pack and a handheld horn adds a failure point, adds weight, and saves you nothing, because a single LXT pack costs about the same as the converter and holds the same energy per cell. One used LXT pack is the cleaner answer.

The right setup for an XGT household

If everything in your shop is 40V max XGT, the entry ticket to the horn is one 18V LXT pack, any capacity, any year. The slide rail hasn't changed since 2005, so a compact 2.0Ah pack, a five-year-old 3.0Ah from a drill kit, or a current 5.0Ah or 6.0Ah pack all seat on the horn identically. A 2.0Ah pack runs the horn fine for occasional use; higher capacity just means more blasts between charges. If you don't own one, you can add an 18V LXT-compatible 2Ah battery and an LXT-compatible charger at checkout, or skip the charger and use your XGT charger with the ADP10.

From there, pick your sound tier. The dual-trumpet model for Makita® 18v batteries hits 130 dB, the quad reaches 140 dB, and the Extreme Series for Makita® 18v batteries pushes 150 dB with a wireless remote that works from up to 160 ft out of the box and up to 2,000 ft with the long-range remote.

One more note for mixed garages: the Extreme Series hardware is the same trumpet-and-compressor package across battery docks. FAQ

Will a Makita® 40V max XGT battery physically click onto a battery train horn?

No. The XGT pack uses a wider rail with additional communication pins than the 18V LXT slide pack, and Makita's two platforms are not cross-compatible in either direction. It won't seat on the horn's dock at all.

Does the ADP10 let me run an 18V LXT tool on an XGT battery?

No. The ADP10 is a charger adapter only. It lets a 40V max XGT charger charge 18V LXT batteries. It doesn't power any tool from any battery, in either direction.

Would the higher-voltage XGT pack at least make the horn louder or last longer?

No on both counts. Output volume is set by the compressor's airflow and the trumpets, and runtime is set by watt-hours. An XGT pack and an LXT pack of the same generation carry the same ten cells and the same energy; the XGT pack just wires them for higher voltage, which the horn's electronics aren't designed to take.

What's the cheapest way in if I only own XGT packs?

A single 18V LXT battery, any capacity. If you already own an XGT charger, the ADP10 adapter lets it charge that LXT pack, so one battery plus one small adapter is the complete entry cost.

I have 36V (18V X2) LXT tools. Do those batteries work?

Yes. Makita's 36V LXT tools run on two standard 18V LXT packs, not a 36V battery. Each of those packs is an ordinary LXT battery and seats on the horn on its own.
