Keep the trumpets pointed away from people, hold the horn at arm's length or set it on the ground facing downfield, use short blasts, and never fire it next to someone's head. At normal signaling distance — players 30, 50, 100+ yards away — the level they hear is far below what the horn produces at the trumpet.
