That split keeps the setup simple, but it means pack lifespan depends on charging habits most owners never think about. Here is the full routine: which charger to use, how far a charge goes, what temperatures to charge in, and what charge level to leave the pack at when the horn sits.
Use the battery brand's own charger, nothing else
Every BossHorn unit runs on a stock cordless-tool pack, so the correct charger is the one that matches the battery, not the horn. A Milwaukee®-compatible horn takes an M18™ pack, and that pack goes back on an M18™ charger. The same rule applies to DeWalt® 20V MAX™, Ryobi® ONE+™, Makita® LXT™, and the rest of the platforms we build for. The manufacturers are blunt about this. Milwaukee's charger manual says to use M18 batteries only with M18 chargers and tools, and warns against counterfeit, aftermarket, or "knockoff" batteries and chargers because other battery types could explode. DeWalt's manual says not to charge the pack with any charger other than the ones listed.

Do not wire a battery to a power supply plug or a car cigarette lighter, and do not charge in rain, snow, or damp locations. How far one charge goes, and when to top off
A horn pulls power in short bursts, so a single charge lasts far longer than a drill user would expect. A 6.0Ah pack is rated for 500-plus short blasts, and we break the counts down by pack size in our runtime-per-charge guide.
There is no penalty for charging early. Lithium-ion packs have no memory effect, and Milwaukee's manual states it is not necessary to run the pack down before placing it on the charger. DeWalt's manual says the same thing: you may charge a partially used pack whenever you want with no adverse effect. Battery University adds that a partial charge is actually better for the cells than a full one. So the habit is simple: check the fuel gauge and top the pack off the night before a tailgate, a boat weekend, or a trail run. Milwaukee's manual describes exactly that "topped-off" charge before a big day.
The Extreme Series Train Horn for Milwaukee® 18v Battery also protects the pack at the bottom end. Its low-battery cutoff stops the compressor at roughly 15% charge, so the pack never gets pulled into deep discharge, which is the one thing Battery University says lithium-ion cannot tolerate for any length of time.
Charging temperature: the 40°F to 104°F window
This is where permanent damage happens. Battery University lists the permissible charge range as 32°F to 113°F (0°C to 45°C), and states flatly that no charging is permitted at freezing temperatures because metallic lithium plates onto the anode, which permanently degrades both performance and safety. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration repeats that warning in its lithium battery safety bulletin: charging below freezing can lead to permanent lithium plating.

Two details from the DeWalt manual are worth remembering. A cold pack charges at a slower rate for the entire cycle and does not speed back up even after it warms, so a pack that spent the night in the truck bed should come inside for an hour before it touches the charger. A charger and pack that feel warm during charging are normal, but the manual says to keep them out of a metal shed or an uninsulated trailer while they cool. Storage charge level: the 40 to 60 percent rule, and why manuals disagree
The biggest lever on pack lifespan is the charge level it sits at between uses. Battery University's one-year storage data shows why.

The same source says the exact number is not critical, and that anywhere around 40 to 50 percent works. On a four-light fuel gauge, that is two lights lit. Battery University also names an ideal storage temperature of 59°F (15°C), which is a basement or an interior closet, not a truck cab or a shed.
Here is the honest wrinkle. The tool manufacturers' own manuals do not all say the same thing. Milwaukee's manual says to store the pack and charger in a cool, dry place and never where temperatures may exceed 120°F, such as direct sunlight, a vehicle, or a metal building in summer, but it gives no charge-level target. DeWalt's manual says that for long storage it recommends storing a fully charged pack in a cool, dry place out of the charger, and adds that packs should never be stored completely depleted. Battery University's data favors partial charge. Our recommendation reconciles the two. If the horn will sit for months, leave the pack at 40 to 60 percent and keep it indoors, which is the routine in our clean-and-store guide. If you know you will not check on it, a full pack is far better than a dead one, because the one outcome every source agrees is fatal is a pack left at zero.
Whichever level you pick, check it every few months. A healthy lithium-ion pack self-discharges only about 1 to 3 percent per month at room temperature, but a pack left clicked into a horn with a wireless receiver drains faster than that, which brings us to the next habit.
Should the pack live on the charger or on the horn?
Neither, for long stretches. Milwaukee's manual says its charger will keep a pack fully charged if left in the bay, and DeWalt's says a finished pack may be left in the charger, so an overnight stay is harmless. But the OSHA bulletin advises removing lithium-powered devices and batteries from the charger once they are fully charged, and Milwaukee's own safety list says to unplug the charger and remove batteries when not in use. Full charge plus a warm charger is the combination the storage table above penalizes.
Leaving the pack on the horn is a different problem. The remote receiver sips a few milliamps around the clock, which our standby drain article works out to weeks, not months, before a compact pack is flat. For a daily-carry horn in the truck, leaving it attached is the whole point. For a horn that sits between game days, pull the pack, set it at half charge, and store it inside.
Safety checks before every charge
The OSHA bulletin lists the warning signs to look for before charging or using any lithium battery: bulging or cracking, hissing, leaking, rising temperature, and smoke. A pack showing any of those should be removed from service, not charged. DeWalt's manual says the same about a cracked or damaged case: do not insert it into the charger. Beyond that, the manuals agree on a short list.
- Charge in a well-ventilated area and keep the charger's vents clear. Milwaukee's manual says vented gases from a charging battery may explode near open flames or smoking.
- Keep grinding dust, metal chips, steel wool, and other conductive debris away from the charger cavity, per DeWalt's manual. Truck-bed toolboxes collect exactly that.
- Do not charge a pack that has been submerged, and never freeze or immerse the charger. Both manuals say so.
- Let a pack that just fired a long string of blasts cool before it goes on the charger. Milwaukee's fuel gauge flashes an alternating pattern when the pack hits an over-temperature state, and the manual says to let it cool and reinsert.
FAQ
Can I charge the horn battery in my truck with an inverter?
Only with the brand's own charger plugged into a proper inverter, and only inside the temperature window. Milwaukee's manual explicitly prohibits wiring a battery to a power supply plug or a car cigarette lighter. Do not charge in a closed cab that has been sitting in summer sun, since the pack will be above the 104°F limit and the charger will simply wait.
What charge level should I leave the pack at over the off-season?
Around 40 to 60 percent, indoors, with a check every few months. If you cannot commit to checking, a full pack stored cool is acceptable and is what DeWalt's manual recommends. Never store it empty.
Does charging a half-used pack hurt it?
No. Both the Milwaukee and DeWalt manuals say a partially discharged pack can be charged at any time with no adverse effect, and Battery University says partial charges are easier on the cells than full ones.
Will a cold pack still fire the horn?
