And the heat builds fast: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a vehicle's interior can climb about 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.

Not every spot in the truck is equally brutal, though. From a gear-storage standpoint, the cab breaks down roughly like this:

  • Dashboard and rear deck: the worst — direct sun through glass pushes surfaces past 150°F.
  • Seats and center console: hot, but noticeably cooler than the dash.
  • Glovebox and under-seat floor: shaded, closer to ambient cabin air — still 110°F+ on a bad day.

What Heat Actually Does to a Lithium-Ion Battery

Heat is the mirror image of cold, and it's the meaner twin. Heat is different: it accelerates the chemical side reactions that age a cell, and that capacity never comes back.

Large-scale breakdown of a cell's protective interface layer starts above roughly 266°F (130°C), and runaway itself typically kicks off around 302°F (150°C). Even in desert heat, with 110°F outside, a parked car's interior tops out around 160°F — nowhere near cell-failure territory.

So the everyday summer risk is degradation, not fire. That said, heat narrows your margin for error, so a few rules are worth following:

  • Never charge a heat-soaked pack. Let it cool into the charger's window first — most chargers will refuse an overheated battery anyway.
  • Keep the pack out of direct sun behind glass. Surface heating on a dark battery casing runs well above cabin air temperature.
  • Retire any pack that's been dropped hard, punctured, or swollen. Damaged cells are the ones that fail at ordinary temperatures.
  • Don't store a pack touching bare metal that sits in the sun, like a truck bed or the lid of a bed toolbox.
